Get Home Bag List: What to Pack at Every Budget

Bag Lists Get Home Bag List

This is a get home bag: what it takes to get from where you are to where your family is, mostly on foot, in a day. Below is every item at three budgets, with the reason each one is in the bag.

This list is built for one person getting home on foot in about a day, four seasons. Answer five quick questions and the builder sizes it for your people, your climate and how far you have to go.

Water

You can go three weeks without food and three days without water, and you'll be useless long before day three. Carry some, and carry a way to make more. The mistake people make: one bottle and no filter, as if the tap is coming back.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System

Two ounces. It screws onto a water bottle or works like a straw: the cheapest way to make bad water safe to drink.

✓ – – $28.99Amazon
Katadyn BeFree 1.0L Water Filter

The BeFree filters a liter in under a minute and weighs 2 oz. The single most useful thing in the bag.

– ✓ – $42.95Amazon
Sawyer Squeeze Filter with Cnoc 2L Bladder

The Squeeze flows faster than the Mini, and the 2-liter bag lets you fill up once and filter later.

– – ✓ $64.95Amazon

Fire

Fire is warmth, clean water, cooked food and morale, in that order. I carry three ways to start one because the first will be wet, the second will be lost, and the third is the one that matters. The mistake: a single lighter in a pants pocket.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
Dewalt Concealer Anti-Fog Dual Mold Safety Goggles

Three ways to make fire, because one will fail.

✓ ✓ ✓ $12.59Amazon
Dual Arc Waterproof Electric Lighter- RED

Plasma lighter: windproof, waterproof, rechargeable from your power bank.

– ✓ ✓ $14.99Amazon

Shelter and warmth

Weather kills faster than hunger. A poncho and a tarp get you out of the rain in ten minutes; a bivvy gets you through a night you didn't plan on. The mistake: packing for the day you leave, not the night you stay out.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
High Visibility Reflective Vest

Mr.BOBB carries this one.

✓ ✓ ✓ $6.98Amazon
Mechanix Wear Original Work Gloves

Mr.BOBB carries this one.

✓ ✓ ✓ $23.99Amazon

Mylar Emergency Blankets (10 Pack)

Mr.BOBB carries this one.

✓ ✓ ✓ $13.99Amazon
SOL Emergency Bivvy with Whistle

A 4.5 oz bivvy is a sleeping bag you can afford to carry and never use.

✓ ✓ ✓ $28.78Amazon
Stansport Medium-Duty Rip-Stop Tarp 8' x 10'

Shelter in ten minutes with the paracord: an 8 x 10 ft roof that packs down to about two pounds.

✓ – – $14.99Amazon
Gold Armour Rainfly Tarp, 12 x 10 ft

A light ripstop rainfly, 12 x 10 ft: room to roof a camp or a car, and it packs into its own sack.

– ✓ ✓ $27.99Amazon

First aid

This kit treats what actually happens: cuts, blisters, burns, sprains, upset stomachs. It is not a trauma bay. Know what's in it before you need it. The mistake: a big kit you've never opened.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
✓ ✓ ✓ $14.99Amazon
Adventure Medical Kits Ultralight/Watertight .5

Treats what's likely: cuts, blisters, burns, sprains.

✓ – – $31.95Amazon
Badger SPF 35 Sport Sunscreen

✓ ✓ ✓ $17.99Amazon
Nitrile Disposable Gloves

Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer

Treats what's likely: cuts, blisters, burns, sprains.

✓ ✓ ✓ $21.11Amazon
Adventure Medical Kits Ultralight & Watertight .7

The .7 covers two people for three days; the watertight bag is why I chose this one.

– ✓ – $44.95Amazon
My Medic MyFak First Aid Kit - Basic

A bigger, organized kit with more of everything, sorted so you can find it fast when your hands are shaking.

– – ✓ $114.95Amazon

Signal and navigate

Being found is a plan, not luck. A whistle carries farther than a voice, a mirror reaches an aircraft, a compass works when the phone doesn't. The mistake: counting on a phone with 12% battery and no signal.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
SE CC4580 Lensatic/Prismatic Compass

The tools that make everything else in the bag work.

✓ ✓ ✓ $11.99Amazon
UST JetScream Floating Whistle

A whistle carries farther than your voice and never gets hoarse. This one floats, so clip it to your jacket or a strap and it stays with you even if the bag doesn't.

✓ ✓ ✓ $10.60Amazon
UST Marine Micro StarFlash Mirror

A signal mirror reaches a helicopter ten miles out. Nothing else in the bag does that.

✓ ✓ ✓ $7.99Amazon
Midland WR120B NOAA Weather Alert Radio

A weather radio that sounds an alarm for warnings in your county, even while you sleep, and runs on AA batteries when the power is out.

– – ✓ $47.00Amazon

Light and power

Everything is harder in the dark, and dark comes every day. A headlamp keeps both hands free; a power bank keeps the headlamp and the phone alive. The mistake: one flashlight with the batteries it came with.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
Cyalume 6-Inch Green Glow Sticks (10)

Light after dark is safety, not comfort.

✓ ✓ ✓ $17.35Amazon
Petzl Tikkina Headlamp

A real headlamp at a budget price: both hands free, and it runs on three AAA batteries you can buy anywhere.

✓ – – $19.95Amazon
Fenix HL45R Rechargeable Headlamp

The HL45R: 850 lumens, USB-C, 9.6 oz. Plenty of light for less money than the HM65R-T.

– ✓ – $79.67Amazon
BLAVOR 10,000 mAh Solar Power Bank

Keeps a phone alive for days. The solar panel is a slow trickle, not a charger, but it beats nothing when the grid is down.

– – ✓ $35.99Amazon
Fenix HM65R-T Rechargeable Headlamp

A headlamp keeps both hands free. 1,500 lumens, USB-C, and it takes a spare 18650 cell.

– – ✓ $104.95Amazon

Food

Calories keep you thinking straight. Freeze-dried meals weigh almost nothing; a stove that burns twigs means no fuel to run out of. The mistake: canned food (heavy) or nothing but granola bars (day two is grim).

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
Mountain House Freeze-Dried Breakfast (4 Servings)

Calories you can eat without cooking if you have to.

✓ ✓ ✓ $21.76Amazon
Stanley Adventure Camp Cook Set

Hot food and boiled water.

✓ ✓ ✓ $45.00Amazon

Hygiene

Staying clean is how you stay healthy on day three. Hands, teeth, and the ability to go to the bathroom with some dignity. The mistake: skipping this category because it isn't exciting.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
Coghlan's Toilet Tissue (2-Pack)

Staying clean is how you stay healthy on day three.

✓ ✓ ✓ $4.29Amazon
Compact Toothbrush

Staying clean is how you stay healthy on day three.

✓ ✓ ✓ $9.99Amazon
Lava Heavy-Duty Hand Cleaner Bar (3-Pack)

Staying clean is how you stay healthy on day three.

✓ ✓ ✓ $12.04Amazon
Surviveware Biodegradable Wet Wipes (32)

Staying clean is how you stay healthy on day three.

✓ ✓ ✓ $11.99Amazon

Tools

The things that make everything else in the bag work: a knife, cord, something to write with, a way to fix what breaks. The mistake: a huge knife and nothing else.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
Morakniv Companion Fixed Blade Knife

Mr.BOBB carries this one.

✓ – – $19.99Amazon
Silky GomBoy Pro Folding Saw

The tools that make everything else in the bag work.

✓ ✓ ✓ $63.99Amazon
TECEUM 550 Paracord Type III, 100 ft

A hundred feet of paracord: shelter lines, repairs, a clothesline, a tourniquet in a pinch.

✓ ✓ ✓ $6.49Amazon
Morakniv Companion Knife, Black

Mr.BOBB carries this one.

– ✓ – $19.99Amazon
ESEE 6P Fixed Blade Knife

Mr.BOBB carries this one.

– – ✓ $143.02Amazon

Carry it

Dry sacks keep the important stuff dry and let you find things without dumping the pack. The pack itself should fit you, not the other way around. The mistake: a bag that's full on day one.

Item EssentialsSolidBest gear Buy
Sea to Summit Compression Dry Sacks

Mr.BOBB carries this one.

✓ ✓ ✓ $44.95Amazon
Seibertron Falcon 37L Backpack

A 37-liter MOLLE pack for less than half the price of the Rush 12, with room for a day's kit and a jacket.

✓ – – $49.99Amazon
5.11 Rush 12 2.0 Backpack

The Rush 12 holds a day's kit and still fits under a desk or behind a car seat.

– ✓ ✓ $108.99Amazon
