Fenix TK30R White Laser Flashlight Review

Fenix TK30R White Laser Flashlight Review

There are 3 main categories of lighting we like to have in our preparedness and camping plans:

  • Lanterns for area light
  • Headlamps for hands free work
  • Torches (of flashlights) for going on walks and seeing (identifying) things at a distance

It's that last category that we're looking at now with the Fenix TK30R. It takes seeing things at a distance to a whole new level with white laser module technology that pumps out light to almost a mile away!

So if you live, work, or play in wide open spaces this light can't be beat. Do you live on a ranch and want to know what's bothering the cows? Coyotes a problem where you live?

The TK30R is also a really great light to have on a boat - see and be seen far enough to avoid collisions at evening or night.

Do you live in the city? Work as a fireman? A light like this serves dual purposes: seeing way, way down streets or high up into buildings during power outages or just blinding the heck out of anyone nearby who made the mistake of bothering you.

Let's dive into this absolute blowtorch or a light, shall we?

Reach Out and Light Someone

There's really only 1 reason to have a TK30R and that's to light up things really far away in the dark.

The TK30R does this one thing exceptionally well: it shines a super tight, super bright, narrowly focused beam of light at objects 100 to 1600 yards away or more (output as far as 4921 feet or 1500 meters.)

This makes identification of things still potentially out of threat range possible to give you time to react, or to ID animal species or behavior without spooking them off before you can spot them with the light.

You can also use it to signal people at distance, or to blind an aggressor nearby, but these are not the primary use cases for this type of light for the majority of us.

For the spec nerds: the light puts out 500 lumens at 600,000 candela!

Quick Review of Lumens and Candela

Lumens measure the total amount of light emitted, indicating overall brightness, while candela measures the intensity of light in a specific direction, showing how focused and far-reaching the beam is.

High-lumen devices are ideal for wide-area lighting, while high-candela devices excel in long-distance, pinpoint illumination.

The Fenix TK30R prioritizes candela over lumens, delivering an intensely focused beam that reaches nearly a mile.

How the TK30R Does It

The TK30R is not an LED based light. It uses a white laser instead. What is white laser you might ask?

White laser modules are a relatively recent innovation in lighting technology, emerging in the early 2010s as advancements in laser and phosphor technologies converged.

They were originally developed for specialized industrial and scientific applications and gained traction for their ability to produce intense, focused beams with excellent precision and range but now we get to have them in the consumer market as well.

Dual Switch Operation

The Fenix TK30R has a unique feature which I like but don't see in many flashlights. In addition to your standard push button on/off switch on the tail, it also comes with a rotating on/off/lockout switch as well.

You can lock the light so that it wont accidentally discharge should you tap the rear button inadvertently using the rotating dial at the back. That same dial can also turn the light on into either low or high mode if you prefer to use the dial as opposed to the switch.

I like the lock out feature, especially with a light this powerful. An accidental discharge into someones eyes point blank could probably cause some damage to the eyes, so I would keep the light locked until I needed it.

Probably a good idea to keep this light away from the kiddos as well, or at the very least they should be under supervision if you let them use it.

And don't shine this thing into anyones face who is driving at night!

Battery Power & Runtime

The Fenix TK30R comes with a 21700 rechargeable li-ion battery with 6000 mAh which is easily removable and swapped out in the field. You can grab an extra one from Fenix for about $30.

Determining actual runtime really isn't possible in the real world, since usage can be so variable, but you can generally get an idea with the specs listed by Fenix when looking at battery capacity vs lighting mode. You can see that there is a pretty big lumen drop once you use the light at full power (500 LM) for the first 15 minutes off of a full charge, which stabilizes at around 300 lumens until you hit the 3 hour mark.

Build Quality

The TK30R is built like a tank to be sure since its made out of A6061-T6 aluminum with a Type HAIII hard-anodized finish. It feels solid when you hold it and will likely withstand quite a bit of abuse.

The glass on the light itself is "toughened" although I'm not quite sure what that means - hopefully it means if you fumble it and it lands on the glass it won't shatter on you too easily.

Fenic TK30R in the supplied carrying case

The TK30R comes with a soft case / holder and while I normally wouldn't use one with a flashlight (I just shove them anywhere, really) given the cost of this light and the size of it I think the case will be the default carry option for this light for me.

I have a MOLLE panel on the back of my seat in the truck, this light going to live there from now on since the case is compatible - the strap has velcro which can be used as either a belt look or threaded into MOLLE.

The light is IP68 rated which means it is fully submersible to 2 meters for 30 minutes (as long as you have the charging port closed, please close the charging port!)
