The first enemy to people trying to put together their Go Bags is time. It takes a lot of effort to research and assemble an Emergency Kit. The second enemy is money. A high-end kit with all the best products will cost you easily over $1000 per Bug Out Bag. Ouch.

A hand powered LED flashlight, compass/whistle some waterproof matches, a deck of cards, and an AM/FM radio. All told not bad, though you might consider replacing the radio with our favorite Sony AM/FM handheld.

The water rations are pretty great, and according to the package should stay fresh for 5 years. The food rations are your standard Coast Guard survival bars. Pretty miserable after a few meals, see our article about 72 Hour Food Supplies for some other ideas.

4800 calories total with the 2 packs. Thats 800 calories a day, or 2 bars per person per day for 3 days.

Only showing 1 of the 2 personal care kits: toothbrush, comb, washcloth, razor, pads, hair products and handy wipes. Might want to add a microtowel.

A pretty decent pocket knife, a note book and pencil, a small sewing kit, and an oil lamp.

1 set of goggles and a biohazard bag for waste. 2 face masks and a small first aid kit. Some Aquatabs for water purification, consider adding a Sawyer MiniFilter.

2 mylar sleeping bags and 2 emergency ponchos. Good in a pinch but probably not going to last more than a couple of days.

I like the design of the pack. Lots of pockets make it easy to organize. On the top pocket we keep the things you might need quickly.

Ponchos and face masks are easy to get to quickly in the front bottom pocket. Some loops on the outside give a place to strap in a towel or wet poncho.

The water and food are heavy, so we stick those in the main part of the bag. Lots of room left over for a change of clothes and the other items you'll need.

One of our favorite parts of the bag, a list of all the other items you should collect and keep in your bag. Very well done. Don't skip this step!

The strap system includes a chest retention strap. The bag: the design is awesome, the durability, not so much. It's fine to take from here to there but I don't really trust the bag to carry much weight. And the zippers integrity worries me. I would suggest looking at getting another backpack to use along with this, something that can hold more weight and use this one for the light weight stuff like clothes and documents, etc. A good inexpensive backpack is the High Sierra Loop for $30 on Amazon.

There isn't anything included if you need to sleep somewhere other than home, so no earplugs or pillows or eye mask. I'd prefer to see a headlamp than the LED hand light included. And I'm a little fearful of carrying that oil lamp in your kit, should it leak. If you want to keep it in there make sure it's double bagged and keep it away from the kids.

In conclusion: This bag gives you a fantastic platform to build on. It's like Bug Out Bag 101. It touches on pretty much each category you would need and can be really helpful in a pinch. It's exactly what you should start out with, and it will help you start the process of getting your emergency planning started.
