Uncharted Supply Co The SEVENTY2 Survival System on a mans back in a tunnel

The SEVENTY2 Survival Systems

We have a love-hate relationship around here with pre-made emergency survival kits.

On the one hand they can save you time by providing a good portion of the items you would need/want for your survival kits, be it a Bug Out Bag or Get Home Bag.

On the other, most of the kits we've seen out in the world fail miserably on that part. Or, if they do have the right kinds of items, they are usually of a lesser quality than we would recommend or rely on ourselves.

However we have found one company's products that straddles both sides the line pretty well, and that is the Uncharted Supply Co's - The SEVENTY2 Survival Systems.

They are great platforms to build off of, get started with, and get you in the game by providing good quality items at a decent price point.

The Seventy2 on a mans back in the woods with his family

Uncharted Supply Co makes two different survival systems: The SEVENTY2 and The SEVENTY2 Pro.

The SEVENTY2 starts at $389 and The SEVENTY2 Pro starts at $565.

We'll explore both systems and see what they have to offer and see which might be the best for your needs, or if they are not the right type of kit for you at all.

BTW If you buy anything with the links we provide on this page we might get a small percentage of the sale. For more info click here.

95% of all survival situations are resolved within 72 hours, but the first 72 hours are extremely critical. Having the right gear can mean the difference between life and death.

With that in mind, we worked closely with first responders, doctors, special forces operators, mountain guides and other experts to develop the world's best 72-hour survival kit.

The result? A product that changes a potentially deadly situation into one where you come out alive.

The SEVENTY2 Pro Survival System

The SEVENTY2 Pro Survival System

Typical Price: $565

Due to overwhelming demand by government, experts and professional groups, we went back to the drawing board and rebuilt the Seventy2 from the ground up for professional daily use.

While the backpack looks similar to the original, durability, fit and organization has been improved. Internal tools have been beefed up and refined, and new colorways make the Seventy2 stand out. Or blend in.

Designed with professional grade tools for repeated use in harsh environments.

Pros

These packs are super simple to use. The insert is well organized and makes finding the stuff you need a breeze.

The survival tips on the insert are a great idea.

The backpack straps on the insert a a total win, boss move. Having the ability to use it separately from the bag is very smart.

Cons

Pre-made kits can't be everything to everybody in every area. Also for everything you add, up goes the price, so a manufacturer like Uncharted Supply Co has to take a balanced approach to design and product inclusion.

I am going to make a list of things here that The SEVENTY2 doesn't have, either from a design or product standpoint, and it's not to knock the kit at all, but more to inspire you to add to it or make it more appropriate for your needs or to design your own from the ground up if that's what will be best for you.

Backpack Design

The backpacks as designed are pretty cool, and we like the fact that they can be used as an improvised flotation device. The SEVENTY2 lacks some of the items below, the SEVENTY2 Pro addresses some but we would still prefer:

  • More pockets: there's the one on the front and the 2 on the hip belt, but having one or two more for quick access items (lights, knife, fire kit, protective equipment.)
  • In order to access any of the items in the kit, you have to pull the entire insert out of the shell to do so. This is a good thing / bad thing depending on the use case in our opinion.
  • No MOLLE: there are great laser cut MOLLE options out there. It's a great way to add low drag attachment points to the outside of the pack.
  • The first aid kit in the SEVENTY2 Pro has MOLLE straps on the back, but since there is no MOLLE on the outside of the shells it wont live on the outside.

Products

All the products included in the kit are good mid-range to upper-range items, so no complaints about the quality, but some of the items might not make sense for your needs and be gratuitous.

This kit is essentially designed for wilderness use. City folk won't get much utility from the shovel and matches. If you are looking for items useful in metro areas, see our Gray Man Urban Survival Kit for ideas.

Mask & Goggles: There is a N99 mask in the kits and goggles, and I'm not sure they are necessary. The mask wont help with smoke, you'll need something beefier than the one supplied. If you live in an area where goggles would be helpful then great, but outside of high snow areas or cities on fire I'm not sure what their utility is (and they are bulky.)

Sawyer water filters are OK, but there are some better options out there.

Are they worth it?

I priced out all of the items in the SEVENTY2 by looking for comparable products online, and then made some assumptions about what the backpack and insert are worth.

Here's what I came up with:

Mylar Tent/Shelter  $       15.00
RZ M2 Air Mask  $       15.00
Hand & Body Heat Pack (2x)  $         4.00
Mylar emergency blanket  $         2.00
Stormproof Matches  $       15.00
Datrex 1200 Calorie Survival Bar  $         5.00
Uncharted 100% acrylic Beanie  $         8.00
Ballistic rated goggles  $       20.00
Chem Lights (2x)  $         2.00
Uncharted X RediTape duct tape 5 yd  $         2.00
3-in1 Radio: flashlight, radio, charger  $       25.00
Multi-tool: pliers, saw, screwdriver, knife  $       12.00
Shovel/Pickaxe  $       17.00
Flashlight  $         7.00
Knife  $         8.00
Ferro rod and flint striker  $         6.00
Paracord  $         6.00
50 SPF sun screen  $         7.00
Sawyer Mini water filter system  $       20.00
48oz Nalgene water bottle  $       12.00
Uncharted First Aid Kit  $       25.00
15 Antibacterial Wet Wipes  $         2.00
Insulated/Waterproof Gloves  $       10.00
Product Subtotal  $     245.00
The SEVENTY2 Shell  $       55.00
The SEVENTY2 Insert  $       35.00
Backpack & Insert Subtotal  $       90.00
TOTAL  $     335.00
The SEVENTY2 SALE PRICE  $     389.00
Difference  $       54.00

What this table tells me is that your essentially paying a ~$50 premium for the SEVENTY2 over building a kit similar to this yourself.

The difference is a little more striking when looking at the SEVENTY2 Pro, which we believe you can source for around ~$440 yourself - a $130 difference of their cost of $565.

Are those deal breakers? Up to you to decide. I wouldn't say the kits are necessarily overpriced, you are getting benefits from the organization the bag insert offers, and they did all the work of putting it together.

Conclusions

If you are looking for an easy solution for a Get Home Bag that lives in your vehicle, the SEVENTY2 kits are perfect for that. Add a change of clothes and some of the other items we mentioned above and you are set.

If you are looking for a 72-hour Bug Out Bag, then you might be better served making your own, this kit feels a little small to us and is missing a few items you would want to have to smooth things out while sleeping on a floor or cot somewhere for a few days.

Use out Custom Bag Builder Tool to make a custom kit with some of our recommendations, and make sure you have a WUSH bag setup first!
